Concerts and Recordings of Fritz Reiner with the Chicago Symphony
In 1953, Fritz Reiner was named Music Director of the Chicago Symphony, a post he
maintained for nine seasons until the end of the 1961-1962 season.
Reiner then became Musical Advisor in Chicago for the 1962-1963 season.
After decades of frustration for Fritz Reiner, constantly seeking his own
orchestra in a major cultural center with sound financial backing, the
Chicago Symphony offered Reiner the potential for fulfillment of his
ambitions. Fritz Reiner also proved to be the orchestra leadership
cure Chicago had been seeking after ten years of the less-than-successful
succession of Désiré Defauw,
Arthur Rodzinski and Rafael Kubelik as Chicago principal conductors.
This partnership of Reiner and the Chicago Symphony was to prove to be
a legendary and fertile partnership, also immortalized in a series of spectacular
recordings made for RCA Victor in the new stereophonic process.
This www.stokowski.org site also has a listing of all of the concerts of Fritz Reiner
with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra 1922-1931 when he was its conductor.
The Famous Recordings of Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony
Even though Georg Solti famously claimed that prior to his arrival
in Chicago in 1969, the Chicago Symphony was a
"provincial orchestra", in fact, through good selection
of musicians, demanding standards and in part through his ruthless elimination
of any musician who displeased him, Reiner build one of the great orchestras of
the world in Chicago. Reiner also built the orchestra's reputation by
their famous series of recordings for RCA Victor during the 1950s, particularly
his pioneering stereophonic recordings beginning in 1954. It is said that
Reiner and the Chicago Symphony recorded 122 different works.
In 1953, when Fritz Reiner was named Music Director of the Chicago Symphony,
he was already under contract with RCA Victor. The first commercial
recording sessions of Reiner and the Chicago Symphony took place on 6 March 1954
in Orchestra Hall, Chicago. These also were their first stereophonic
recordings. RCA was pioneering stereophonic recordings and this first
session followed the 6 October 1953 Stokowski experimental recordings made
in New York, and the February, 1954 stereophonic recordings of the Boston Symphony
with Charles Munch.
RCA Recording Producer Richard Mohr with Fritz Reiner
In this first recording session were some famous Reiner recordings: stereophonic
recordings of Richard Strauss's Ein Heldenleben opus 40 and the
Dance of the Seven Veils from Strauss's Salome
opus 54. Ein Heldenleben was issued first in 1954 on a
monophonic LP disc RCA LM-1807 (stereo LPs had not yet been developed) and
then in a very successful 1954 stereo LP.
The 1958 stereophonic release RCA Red Seal LSC-1807 of the 1954
Ein Heldenleben
Fritz Reiner maintained his Chicago post for nine seasons until the end of
the 1961-1962 season. At this point, after a series of heart attacks,
failing health forced Reiner to reduce his activities. His last concert
as Chicago Music Director was on 27 April 1962. Fritz Reiner
then became "Musical Advisor" in Chicago for the 1962-1963
season, and he hoped to carry on with a reduced schedule. However,
he then experienced a further series of coronary attacks, and his last
performance with the Chicago Symphony was on 20 April 1963 with Van Cliburn
in the Beethoven: Piano Concerto no 4. Fritz Reiner died in a
New York City hospital November 15, 1963.
Information Sources
A major source of information for this concert listing was the listing of
subscription concerts disseminated by the excellent Fritz Reiner Society,
Stephen C. Hillyer, President and key organizer of the Society's many
efforts 1. This Fritz Reiner Society
listing was supplemented and corrected by research
in the archive of newspaper articles of the period, and my own collection
of Reiner programmes. John Borders, another Fritz Reiner admirer provided
Fritz Reiner Society publication useful in this effort. Thanks John!
I have also begun to add Reiner - Chicago Symphony concerts done in other cities,
outside the usual subscription series, and other special concerts.
Corrections, additions and comments on this material will be welcome by
contacting me.
